Columbus, OH – Drivers across Ohio are being urged to stay vigilant as shorter days increase deer collision risks. Since 2019, over 109,000 deer-involved crashes have been reported statewide, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Stark County leads with 3,138 crashes, followed by Richland (2,880) and Hancock (2,725).

The collisions, which often occur at dawn and dusk, peak during the fall and early winter months. With winter driving hazards already complicating road conditions, drivers must remain cautious, especially in rural and wooded areas.

Authorities advise reducing speed in high-risk areas, using high beams when possible, and being prepared for deer to move in groups. If a collision seems unavoidable, brake firmly and avoid swerving, as losing control could worsen injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds residents that deer-related crashes occur in all 88 counties. Officials encourage drivers to review additional safety tips and statistics on their crash dashboard at statepatrol.ohio.gov.

Stay safe this season and help reduce collisions by sharing this information with friends and family.
