Oak Brook, IL – The Oak Brook Police Department has issued a crime prevention bulletin urging residents to secure their homes, vehicles, and valuables as September begins. The department noted an increase in residential burglaries in Oak Brook and nearby communities.
Oak Brook authorities recommend securing all doors and windows and activating alarm systems, which are only effective if properly engaged. The police also advise residents to turn on interior lights when leaving home and ensure yards are well-lit with motion-sensitive lighting. The department highlights the importance of trimming shrubs and trees, as these can serve as hiding spots for burglars.
According to the bulletin, residents should report any suspicious activity, including vehicles parked in unusual locations, people looking into homes or cars, and individuals loitering or “circling” the neighborhood.
Police advise residents not to share vacation plans on social media, as this could make homes targets for break-ins. Oak Brook offers a “Vacation Watch” program where residents can register their homes for police surveillance during extended absences.
