Northwestern Minnesota and Southeastern North Dakota Face Dangerous Snow Squall Warnings

Grand Forks, ND – A dangerous snow squall warning has been issued for parts of northwestern Minnesota and southeastern North Dakota, creating hazardous travel conditions Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the first warning, issued at 8:26 a.m., covers portions of Red Lake, Norman, Polk, and Mahnomen counties in Minnesota, as well as Grand Forks and Traill counties in North Dakota. The squall, moving southeast at 55 mph, is expected to bring intense bursts of snow, wind gusts exceeding 40 mph, and visibility reduced to less than a quarter-mile. Impacted areas include Crookston, Fosston, and Thompson, with significant risks on Interstate 29 between mile markers 112 and 135.

A second warning, issued at 8:56 a.m., extends to include south-central Polk, western Mahnomen, and Norman counties in Minnesota and central Traill County in North Dakota. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph and rapidly falling visibility were reported, impacting areas such as Mayville, Ada, and Halstad. Conditions are expected to last until 9:30 a.m., posing similar threats to Interstate 29 travelers between mile markers 100 and 120.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed, use headlights, and remain alert for whiteout conditions. Rapid changes in road conditions are likely.
