Michigan City, IN – Northwest Indiana’s wildlife conservation efforts are seeing remarkable success, with a 246% increase in bald eagle rescues reported just four months into 2024.

The significant uptick represents a major conservation milestone, highlighting the region’s growing bald eagle population and the efficacy of local wildlife protection measures.By the end of April 2024, a local wildlife rehabilitation center has already admitted five bald eagles. This is a stark contrast to the previous nine years, where the center saw an average of only about 1.44 eagles per year. The most recent rescue operation took place near Reynolds Creek Game Bird Habitat Area in Michigan City, where a mature bald eagle was found in dire straits but was quickly aided by a community effort.

The 246% increase also has increased public awareness and willingness to assist in conservation efforts. The success is attributed to the collaborative efforts between the community, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and wildlife rehabilitation professionals, who together ensure that these majestic birds receive the care they need.

Supporters are encouraged to contribute to the rehabilitation center’s mission by making donations at www.humaneindiana.org/wildlife-donate, aiding in the continued recovery and release of these magnificent birds back into their natural habitat.
