Gary, IN – A tense hostage situation in Gary, Indiana, ended early Wednesday morning with the rescue of a child and the fatal shooting of a suspect following an hours-long standoff.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began Tuesday evening, April 8th, when officers responded to a barricade situation in the 2200 block of Carolina Street. A 38-year-old man was reportedly holding a 35-year-old male relative and a 1-year-old child hostage inside the apartment. The suspect had fired shots inside the home, injuring the 35-year-old, but he refused to surrender.

At approximately 9 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and SWAT teams were called to assist the Gary Police Department. Officers secured the perimeter, and the SWAT team deployed tear gas in an attempt to force the suspect out. Despite their efforts, the suspect continued to resist, refusing medical treatment for the injured man and barricading himself inside.

Around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9th, the situation took a dangerous turn when the suspect exited the apartment, holding the child and pointing a gun at police officers. In response, a Gary police officer fired on the suspect, who was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
