Chicago, IL – A round of thunderstorms will move through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana this morning, with gusty winds and lightning possible. However, the more significant weather concern arrives Friday as strong southwesterly winds create an elevated fire risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, thunderstorms will track eastward at speeds of 50 to 60 mph early Wednesday. While severe weather is not anticipated, residents should remain aware of rapidly changing conditions.
By Friday, winds could gust between 40 to 45 mph or stronger across the region. Combined with dry conditions, this could lead to an increased risk of grass and brush fires, particularly in open areas. The National Weather Service warns that any fires that ignite may spread quickly.
Additionally, hazardous conditions for small craft are possible on Lake Michigan starting Thursday, with gale-force winds a potential threat on Friday. Boaters and those near the lake should monitor marine forecasts closely.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects ahead of Friday’s strong winds and exercise caution with any open flames or outdoor burning. Fire officials urge the public to avoid discarding cigarettes in dry areas and to follow any local burn bans.
