Springfield, IL – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for northwest Illinois, including areas near the Illinois River, from midnight Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. Freezing rain is forecasted to create hazardous conditions, with ice accumulation up to a tenth of an inch likely.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will remain below freezing overnight, causing icy conditions on roads and elevated surfaces. By mid-morning Saturday, warmer air is expected to help melt the ice. Travelers are advised to delay morning plans to avoid slick roads and potential accidents. Power outages could occur if ice accumulates on tree branches or power lines.
Key impacted areas include the I-74 corridor and communities near Peoria, Bloomington, and Pontiac. Winds gusting up to 30 mph could add stress to trees and infrastructure. Local authorities recommend slowing down, using caution, and keeping an emergency kit in vehicles.
The weather will improve Saturday afternoon, with highs reaching near 37 degrees, followed by rain into the evening. Sunday will see drier conditions with a high near 44 degrees, but rain may return Monday.
For the latest road conditions, call 511 or check online updates. Be prepared for delays and ensure flashlights and chargers are handy in case of power outages.
