Annandale, VA – A prolonged cold snap will keep temperatures in Northern Virginia below seasonal norms throughout the week, with frigid nighttime lows in the 20s and breezy conditions persisting. Daytime highs will struggle to surpass the low 40s, making winter jackets essential.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Monday’s high will peak at 39 degrees, with gusty northwest winds lowering the wind chill to the mid-30s. Tonight, clear skies will allow temperatures to plummet to 25 degrees. Residents are advised to protect outdoor plants and bring pets inside as frost develops overnight.
Tuesday will remain cold but sunny, with a high of 41 degrees and slightly calmer winds from the west. By night, temperatures will dip to 23 degrees under mostly clear skies. The week’s coldest nights are expected midweek, with lows hovering near 20 degrees on Wednesday.
While the chance of precipitation remains low, a slight risk of showers may arise Wednesday night as a weak system passes through. Highs will warm slightly to the mid-40s on Thursday, offering brief relief before colder air returns Friday.
Motorists traveling along Route 50 and other major roadways should watch for icy patches during the morning commute. Layers, gloves, and hats are strongly recommended for those spending time outdoors.
Looking ahead, the NWS forecasts that temperatures may recover slightly by the weekend, with highs near 45 degrees by Sunday. For now, the extended cold requires ongoing preparation and attention to weather updates.
