Duluth, Minnesota – Critical fire weather conditions could grip much of northern Minnesota through Monday, with hot temperatures, gusty winds, and minimal rainfall combining to elevate wildfire risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Sunday, May 11, as temperatures soar and humidity drops across the region. The warning covers areas from International Falls to Hinckley, including Bemidji, Brainerd, and Grand Rapids. Red Flag Warnings and additional fire weather watches may be issued if conditions worsen.

Counties in central and northeastern Minnesota are particularly at risk, including portions of Cass, Itasca, and Aitkin. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin DNR have burn restrictions in place, and residents are urged to avoid any open flames or outdoor burning. Dry vegetation and strong winds could lead to fast-moving wildfires.

Officials recommend staying alert for weather updates, charging mobile devices in case of emergency alerts, and reviewing evacuation plans in high-risk zones. Even routine tasks like grilling or mowing can spark unintended fires under these conditions.

This fire threat may persist into early next week. Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency agencies.
