Hastings, Neb. – South central Nebraska faces a heightened wildfire risk Sunday afternoon as strong winds and extremely low humidity prompt a Fire Weather Watch across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the watch is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph, and humidity levels may drop as low as 18%, creating near-critical to critical fire weather conditions across much of the central and southwestern portions of the state.
Cities including Holdrege, Lexington, Kearney, and Minden fall within the watch area. Open burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid any outdoor activities that could spark flames. Dry grasses and crops, paired with gusty winds, mean fires could ignite and spread rapidly.
The alert also includes key stretches of U.S. Highway 6, Highway 281, and portions of I-80 near Grand Island. Motorists and landowners are advised to remain alert and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
These near-critical fire conditions could persist through Thursday, with the National Weather Service monitoring for additional warnings as conditions evolve.
