Duluth, MN – Northern Minnesota is bracing for severe thunderstorms this afternoon through evening, with forecasts indicating wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

According to the US National Weather Service in Duluth, isolated severe storms are possible across the region, particularly in areas such as International Falls, Grand Rapids, and Hinckley. The primary threats include wind gusts reaching 60 mph, hail up to 1 inch in diameter, and locally heavy rainfall potentially causing minor flooding. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to persist into Monday, though they are not anticipated to be as intense.

Efficient and heavy rainfall could result in localized totals of 2-3 inches, with minor flooding possible. The greatest flash flooding risk extends from central Minnesota into the Arrowhead region and the St. Croix River Valley. Residents are advised to be cautious of ponding water on roads and isolated flash flooding in low-lying areas.

In addition to severe storms, high temperatures and humidity are forecasted to lead to heat indices in the upper 80s to mid-90s. The weather service advises staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Today’s high is expected to reach 86°F, with continued storms and a high of 81°F on Monday. Temperatures will remain in the mid-80s through the week, with sunny conditions returning by Tuesday.
