Gaylord, MI — As meteorological summer comes to an end, northern Michigan experienced a relatively calm season in terms of severe weather, with only two tornadoes confirmed this summer. Despite record heat and heavy rainfall, the region managed to avoid the widespread tornado activity seen in previous years.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the first tornado, an EF-0, touched down in Crawford County on June 5th, causing minor damage. The second, a more powerful EF-1, tore through Gladwin County on June 22nd, leaving a 10-mile path of destruction but thankfully resulting in no injuries.

In addition to these tornadoes, northern Michigan saw its 20th warmest meteorological summer on record, with Traverse City hitting 97°F on August 26th—the highest August temperature in 23 years. This summer’s extreme heat was accompanied by periods of torrential rainfall, particularly in late July, when storms led to flash flooding in parts of Otsego and Antrim counties.
