Northern Michigan Weather Alert: Scattered Storm Chances Continue Through Monday Before Drier Tuesday

Gaylord, Michigan – Northern Michigan will see occasional showers and thunderstorms through the weekend and into early next week, but outdoor plans won’t be washed out. Forecasters expect long stretches of dry weather between isolated rounds of rain, with warm afternoons continuing across both northern Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a few showers and an isolated thunderstorm are possible Saturday, mainly across the eastern Upper Peninsula, before rain chances spread into northern Lower Michigan overnight. Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected at times Sunday and Monday, although widespread rainfall is not anticipated.

Saturday afternoon highs will range from 76 to 84 degrees, followed by overnight lows between 60 and 67 degrees. Temperatures warm into the low 80s to upper 80s Sunday, with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms possible. Monday remains warm with highs between 80 and 87 degrees as scattered showers and storms continue. Drier weather is expected Tuesday with partly sunny skies and highs ranging from 75 to 81 degrees.

Communities including Traverse City, Gaylord, Petoskey, Alpena, Cadillac, Sault Ste. Marie, and Cheboygan should be prepared for brief periods of heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds if thunderstorms develop. Travelers along I-75, US-131, M-32, and US-2 may encounter isolated downpours, but most of the time roads should remain dry.

Residents heading to lakes, campgrounds, or beaches should keep an eye on the sky and move indoors if thunder is heard. While no day appears to be a washout, lightning can develop quickly with isolated storms.
