Traverse City, Michigan – Northern Lower Michigan is preparing for an unusual stretch of dangerous summer heat, with the hottest conditions expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon and continue through Thursday evening. Heat index values are forecast to climb well above normal for late June, with some communities expected to exceed 105 degrees as humidity builds across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday evening for much of Northern Lower Michigan. The watch includes Traverse City, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Cadillac, Kalkaska, Gaylord, Alpena, Cheboygan, Rogers City, Tawas City, West Branch, Gladwin, Standish, Manistee and surrounding communities, as well as Beaver Island and Mackinac Island.

The most intense heat is expected on Tuesday, when inland communities from Alpena to West Branch could experience heat index values between 100 and 108 degrees, while much of northwest Lower Michigan, including Traverse City and Cadillac, could see values between 95 and 103 degrees. Forecasters note that thunderstorm development later in the week may affect daytime temperatures, but persistent humidity and limited overnight cooling will allow heat stress to build over several days.

The prolonged heat will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and anyone without access to air conditioning. Residents should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon and take frequent breaks in cool or shaded locations. Check on neighbors and family members who may be vulnerable, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become fatal within minutes.

The Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through Thursday evening, and additional heat advisories or warnings could be issued as confidence increases in the severity of the event. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service as this prolonged period of dangerous heat approaches.
