Alpena, MI – A dangerous ice storm continues to impact much of northern Michigan, with residents from Alpena to Mackinac Island urged to avoid all travel through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until noon EDT Sunday, March 30. The storm is delivering significant ice accumulations—between two-tenths and three-tenths of an inch—across multiple counties, including Alpena, Montmorency, Otsego, Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, and Charlevoix. Island communities such as Beaver Island and Mackinac Island are also under threat.
Officials warn that ice buildup on trees and power lines may lead to widespread and prolonged power outages. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, are expected to become extremely slick and hazardous, making travel nearly impossible in affected areas.
Residents are advised to delay all non-essential travel and prepare for possible outages. Emergency kits with food, water, and flashlights are strongly recommended.
This storm continues a pattern of late-season ice events in northern Michigan, where March weather often remains volatile. Utility crews and local emergency management teams are on alert, but recovery may be delayed by treacherous conditions.
Residents should monitor updates from local officials and utility providers and report any downed power lines or outages immediately.
