Gaylord, MI – Snow continues across northern Michigan today, creating hazardous travel conditions and plunging temperatures. A clipper system will push through the area, transitioning into lake effect snow by this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected in typical snowbelt areas, including regions west of M-123 and parts of US-31. Blowing snow will reduce visibility, especially during the afternoon commute. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, particularly on snow-covered roads where icy patches may develop. Highs today will hover near 31°F, dropping to the low 20s overnight.

Looking ahead, another system will arrive Friday, bringing gusty winds up to 30 mph and additional snow accumulations. By Saturday night, arctic air will dominate the region, with lows plunging to -5°F. Wind chills Sunday and early next week could reach as low as -25°F, prompting frostbite concerns in as little as 30 minutes. Residents should prepare for extreme cold by ensuring vehicles, homes, and pets are ready for the conditions.

The weekend will remain snowy, with highs near 10°F on Saturday and Sunday. Travel may become challenging as snow persists into early next week, affecting areas along I-75 and M-32.

NWS advises checking local forecasts before traveling and recommends bundling up, checking on neighbors, and avoiding extended outdoor exposure.
