Northern Michigan Braces for 18” of Snowfall Through Thursday Night

Gaylord, MI – A major winter storm is expected to bring heavy lake effect snow and hazardous travel conditions to Northern Michigan starting Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday evening. Accumulations in some areas could exceed 18 inches, with gusty winds creating dangerous visibility and icy roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the storm will begin impacting Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, and Otsego counties around 4 p.m. Wednesday, extending until 7 p.m. Thursday. Snow totals are forecast between 8 and 16 inches, with localized areas possibly reaching higher amounts. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, increasing the likelihood of downed branches and power disruptions.

Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Manistee, and Wexford counties are also under a warning until Thursday evening, expecting between 6 and 10 inches of snow. Similarly, Antrim, Kalkaska, and Charlevoix counties could see accumulations of up to 16 inches beginning Wednesday morning.

The hazardous conditions may severely affect commutes Wednesday night and Thursday morning, especially on untreated roadways and bridges. Officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel and prepare for possible power outages. Travelers are advised to carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water.
