Caribou, ME – Roads across northern Maine are expected to turn slick by early Tuesday evening as a mix of snow, sleet, and ice moves in, setting up hazardous travel through the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday. The system is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of combined snow and sleet, along with a light glaze of ice across Aroostook County.

Communities including Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, and Madawaska will see deteriorating road conditions after sunset, with untreated roads, bridges, and secondary routes becoming slippery first. Visibility may also drop during heavier bursts of snow and sleet overnight.

The mix of precipitation could create tricky conditions along rural routes and local roads, especially in areas like Ashland, Allagash, and Clayton Lake where temperatures hover near freezing. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check Maine’s 511 system before traveling.

Conditions will remain hazardous into mid-morning Wednesday before gradually improving. Additional advisories may be issued if icing becomes more widespread overnight.
