Caribou, Maine – Ice-covered roads and gusty winds will create dangerous travel conditions overnight, with up to 0.20 inches of ice and 40 mph wind gusts developing before the Sunday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight to 10 a.m. Sunday for much of northern and central Maine, including Millinocket, Houlton, and Greenville. Farther north in Aroostook County, including Caribou and Presque Isle, the advisory continues until noon Sunday, with up to 2 inches of snow and 1 inch of sleet possible.
The most hazardous conditions are expected between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., when freezing rain and sleet will coat untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Routes through the North Woods and Penobscot Valley, including areas near Baxter State Park and along Route 11, could become slick quickly as surface temperatures remain below freezing.
Gusty southeast winds may bring down small branches and create isolated power issues, especially in exposed areas across northern Maine and into parts of New Hampshire’s Coos County.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the early morning hours. Conditions will gradually improve late Sunday morning, but additional advisories may follow as the pattern remains active into early next week.
