Caribou, ME – A winter storm system is dropping up to 6 inches of snow across northern Maine, with precipitation expected to taper off by early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, most of the region will see 3 to 6 inches of snow, with higher totals possible in the Central Highlands and parts of northern Washington County. Snow began earlier today and will continue through the evening, ending between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday for much of the state.
Along the Downeast Coast, snow will mix with rain, limiting accumulation. Lower totals are also forecast near the Quebec border due to lighter precipitation. Saint John Valley, which saw a delayed start, is expected to accumulate several inches overnight.
Tuesday and Wednesday could bring additional snow showers north of Katahdin, possibly mixing with rain by midday. Some isolated heavier snow bursts are possible in the northernmost areas during the afternoons.
Highs for midweek are forecast in the lower to mid-40s, while overnight lows will dip into the mid-20s to near 30. Drivers should remain cautious, especially during early morning commutes Tuesday.
