Fort Wayne, Indiana – Widespread accumulating snow is increasingly likely across northern Indiana late Saturday night into Sunday, setting the stage for hazardous travel conditions and reduced visibility across much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, snow is expected to overspread the area Saturday night and continue through Sunday evening, with the heaviest snowfall occurring during the day Sunday. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of northern Indiana, including areas south of U.S. 24 where the highest snow totals and greatest travel impacts are currently expected.
Forecasters say snowfall amounts could reach several inches, with medium confidence in totals due to very dry air initially limiting accumulation, especially farther north. Even so, measurable snow and travel impacts are considered likely across the region. Temperatures are expected to remain in the teens, keeping snow dry and fluffy, which may lead to blowing and drifting snow as northwest winds increase to 10 to 15 mph.
Ahead of the main system, lake-effect snow is producing minor impacts near Lake Michigan today into tonight. One to three inches of snow are possible in northwest Indiana snow belts, including areas near Michigan City, LaPorte, and South Bend. Gusty winds may cause brief whiteout conditions in heavier bands and reduced visibility during commutes.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly late Saturday night and remain hazardous through Sunday. Drivers are urged to plan for extra travel time, avoid unnecessary trips, and monitor updates as watches may be upgraded to warnings.
