Fort Wayne, Ind. – Heavy rain will drench much of northern Indiana this afternoon and evening, with isolated flash flooding possible in cities from South Bend to Fort Wayne through 10 p.m. Sunday. Some neighborhoods may see up to 3 inches of rainfall before midnight, causing urban and low-lying flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the heaviest showers and thunderstorms are likely between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., with rainfall rates occasionally topping 1 inch per hour. Storms could repeatedly pass over the same areas, raising the risk for fast-rising water on roads and creeks across counties including St. Joseph, Allen, Elkhart, La Porte, and Kosciusko.
Travel may become hazardous on major routes such as US-30, US-20, and I-69, where water could pool quickly. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to have a plan to move to higher ground if needed. Street flooding, low-lying area inundation, and rapid river rises are all possible tonight.
Drivers should avoid flooded roads—“Turn Around, Don’t Drown”—and closely monitor updates from emergency agencies and INDOT. This is the region’s most significant rain threat since early spring.
Showers may continue overnight in spots, but the heaviest rain threat ends by midnight. More advisories are possible if storms redevelop.
