SOUTH BEND, Indiana – Residents across northern and central Indiana should prepare for a significant severe weather event beginning late Wednesday afternoon, with the potential for damaging winds and large hail.

The primary window for these powerful storms is expected between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday EDT. According to the National Weather Service, an upper-level disturbance and a strong cold front have prompted the Storm Prediction Center to upgrade the area to an “Enhanced Risk” for severe weather, which is a level 3 out of 5.

Major cities including South Bend, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, and Kokomo are within the risk area. The main threats are straight-line winds strong enough to cause property damage, hail larger than one inch in diameter, and locally heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas. While the primary concerns are wind and hail, forecasters state that a tornado cannot be entirely ruled out.

Officials advise residents to secure outdoor furniture, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and be ready to seek shelter as storms develop. A stray storm is possible in the morning, but the most intense activity is anticipated to align with the afternoon and evening commute.

Hoosiers should monitor local updates closely, as watches and warnings are likely to be issued as the system approaches.
