Fort Wayne, Ind. – A dangerous combination of severe thunderstorms and extreme heat is setting up across Northern Indiana, with damaging storms expected this afternoon and a prolonged heat wave beginning this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) is in effect today from 2 to 9 p.m. EDT for most of the region, including South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Lafayette. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, localized flooding, and large hail. Tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Storms are expected to move through rapidly, but widespread tree damage, power outages, and road flooding are possible. Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to avoid travel during peak storm hours.

By Saturday, intense heat will take hold. High temperatures from 88–95°F combined with high humidity will push daily heat indices close to or above 100°F through Tuesday. Overnight lows in the 70s will offer minimal relief, raising the risk of heat-related illness.

Limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. This will be the hottest stretch so far this summer, with cumulative heat effects becoming increasingly hazardous.

Storm warnings remain in effect through 9 p.m. tonight, followed by Excessive Heat Advisories possible by Saturday.
