Northern Indiana – Drivers across the Michiana region could face slick highways and sudden visibility drops through the Monday morning commute as lake-effect snow continues to stream off Lake Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST / noon CST Monday for Northern and Southern La Porte counties, Eastern and Western St. Joseph counties in Indiana, and Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. Additional snowfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected, with wind gusts reaching 30 mph that could lead to blowing and drifting snow.
Snow bands may intensify at times overnight into Monday morning, especially along and west of U.S. 31 and near I-94. Communities including Michigan City, La Porte, South Bend, Niles and Benton Harbor could see fluctuating snowfall rates as bands shift.
Roads, particularly rural routes and open stretches, may become snow-covered and hazardous. Blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility for motorists during heavier bursts. Travelers should slow down, increase following distance and check 511 road updates before departure.
Snow showers are expected to ease by early Monday afternoon, though patchy drifting could linger beyond the advisory window.
