South Bend, Ind. – A dangerous and prolonged heat wave is baking Northern Indiana this weekend, with heat indices expected to soar as high as 105°F through Tuesday. A heat advisory is in effect today as “feels like” temperatures hit between 96–102°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, an extreme heat watch remains in place from Sunday through Tuesday, with heat index values ranging from 99–105°F. Daily highs are forecast in the low to mid-90s, with little nighttime relief as lows stay in the mid to upper 70s.
The worst conditions are expected in areas including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and Warsaw, where outdoor activities may become dangerous during peak afternoon hours. Residents are urged to stay indoors, use air conditioning if available, and hydrate frequently. Vulnerable groups — including the elderly, young children, and outdoor workers — should take extra precautions.
Minor relief is expected starting Wednesday with increased cloud cover and chances for pop-up storms. Highs will still climb into the low 90s but could feel closer to 94–100°F. By Friday, the region may finally see more significant cooling and humidity breaks.
Heat watches and advisories remain active through Tuesday evening. Monitor for updates as conditions evolve.
