Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is set to experience its hottest temperatures since June 2012 this week, with heat indices expected to reach 95 to 100 degrees each day. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an excessive heat watch for parts of Northern Indiana, southwest Lower Michigan, and northwest Ohio, warning of intense heat and high humidity.

According to the NWS, the prolonged heatwave will bring temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s, with heat indices around 100 degrees. Near-record warm overnight lows in the upper 60s and low 70s will provide little to no relief from the heat. Isolated showers and storms are possible during the week, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours, though confidence in significant rainfall is low.

The extreme heat poses a significant risk to outdoor workers, children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. Residents are urged to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned environments, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat.

Public safety officials emphasize knowing the signs of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. They advise focusing on the combined effects of high heat and humidity rather than the exact air temperature. As conditions develop, stay informed through local weather updates and follow safety guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with this extreme heat.
