Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is under a deep freeze as Arctic air sweeps through the region, bringing dangerously low wind chills and lake-effect snow through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service warns that wind chills will plunge to -15 to -25 starting tonight and persist into midweek. Daytime highs will remain in the single digits Monday and Tuesday, while gusty northwest winds up to 25 mph will increase the risk of frostbite within 30 minutes of exposure. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, dress in multiple layers, and ensure pets are kept indoors.

Snow will also pose challenges, particularly in areas near Lake Michigan. Lake-effect snow showers are expected to intensify in southern Lower Michigan but may spill into northern Indiana, potentially impacting travel on major routes such as I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road. Slick roads and reduced visibility from blowing snow are likely, making travel hazardous.

Conditions will begin to ease on Wednesday as winds diminish and temperatures climb into the teens. By Thursday, northern Indiana will see some relief, with highs reaching the mid-20s and above-freezing conditions expected Friday.

Residents should prepare now for the severe cold by checking heating systems, stocking emergency supplies, and avoiding unnecessary travel. Stay updated through local forecasts, as this dangerous weather could worsen rapidly.
