Chicago, Illinois –Scattered thunderstorms are expected to sweep across northern Illinois through Wednesday afternoon, with the most active cells likely to track along and north of I-80, bringing gusty winds and isolated hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the risk of severe weather remains low—below 5%—but stronger storms could produce hail up to one inch in diameter and winds over 40 mph. These storm chances will be on-and-off, allowing for many dry hours in between waves of rain and thunder.

Cities such as Rockford, Joliet, and the northern Chicago suburbs may experience brief downpours, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. The Lake Michigan shoreline will stay cooler, with highs near 60°F, while inland areas could see temperatures climb into the upper 70s. Storm motion is expected to continue eastward at around 40 mph, potentially affecting evening commutes.

Residents should head indoors at the first sound of thunder and avoid outdoor activities during peak storm windows. Those driving on I-80 or I-88 should use caution, particularly during sudden heavy rainfall.

This unsettled weather pattern will ease by Thursday before another round of showers returns Friday. More updates are expected as conditions evolve.
