Chicago, IL – Fog and rain are set to disrupt travel across northern Illinois through the weekend, with visibility dropping below ¼ mile Thursday morning. Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility, particularly in areas north of I-88, and plan for slow-moving traffic.
According to the National Weather Service, dense fog will persist through mid-morning Thursday, improving gradually by afternoon. Intermittent rain is expected later Thursday evening, increasing in intensity Friday with up to 90% chances of precipitation. High temperatures will rise near 50 degrees Friday, though slick roads and low visibility will remain a concern throughout the day.
The forecast predicts additional rain Saturday night into Sunday, with temperatures staying in the mid-40s. Saturday’s highs may reach the low 50s before cooling again Sunday. Pockets of patchy fog may return overnight Saturday, particularly near water bodies and low-lying areas.
Drivers should exercise caution by reducing speed, using low beams, and allowing extra travel time, especially during peak travel hours. Travelers planning long-distance trips should monitor conditions along major routes like I-90 and I-294 as heavy rain could cause pooling on roadways.
Although no severe weather is expected beyond fog and rain, the National Weather Service advises staying informed through local updates. Looking into next week, cloudy conditions with intermittent rain are expected to continue, with high temperatures fluctuating between 40 and 45 degrees.
