Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across the Chicago area could face slick road conditions on New Year’s Day as another round of light, fluffy snow moves through northern Illinois from late morning into mid-afternoon. While snowfall amounts remain modest, cold temperatures will allow snow to accumulate quickly on untreated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a narrow band of snow is expected to dive southeast across northeast Illinois late this morning, continuing into the early afternoon hours. Snowfall amounts are generally expected to be a dusting up to around one-half inch, but even light accumulation may create travel issues due to subfreezing temperatures.

The snow band is forecast to impact areas including Chicago, Rockford, DeKalb, Aurora, Elgin, Joliet, and portions of northwest Indiana, including Valparaiso. The southern edge of the snow remains sharply defined, meaning conditions could change quickly over short distances. Locations just south of the band may see little to no snow, while areas under the band experience slippery travel.

Snow is expected to fall primarily between late morning and mid-afternoon, with the greatest impacts during that window. Reduced visibility is possible at times, particularly during brief heavier bursts of snow. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are most likely to become slick, while major highways may see slower traffic as drivers adjust to conditions.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps where snow may accumulate.

By mid to late afternoon, the snow will taper off from northwest to southeast, with conditions gradually improving. No significant additional snowfall is expected tonight.
