Chicago, IL – Scattered severe thunderstorms will sweep through northern Illinois between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the potential for damaging winds and a brief tornado. Cities like Chicago, Joliet, and DeKalb are under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) severe weather threat, prompting heightened alerts across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the most intense storms could generate wind gusts over 60 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and short-lived tornadoes. Torrential downpours may also cause ponding on roads, especially in low-lying parking lots and urban intersections.

Communities from Rockford to Kankakee, and as far west as Ottawa and Pontiac, should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Travel on I-55, I-80, and I-88 could become hazardous during the late afternoon commute. Power outages and tree damage are also possible in areas impacted by stronger cells.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, including NOAA radios and mobile alerts. If warnings are issued, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy structure away from windows.

More storms are expected to move east-northeast at 35–45 mph. Additional advisories may be issued later today as the system progresses.
