Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana saw snow totals ranging from less than an inch to 3 inches Friday. The storm created slick roads and a challenging morning commute for many residents.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest snowfall was reported in Paxton, IL, with 3.1 inches. Morocco, IN, followed closely with 3 inches. Joliet recorded 2.8 inches, while Oswego, Tinley Park, and Watseka each received 2.5 inches.
Snowfall totals varied widely across the region due to a sharp cutoff in moisture near the I-55 corridor. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport reported 2.2 inches, while Rockford Airport saw less than half an inch. Romeoville recorded 2.4 inches, and Midway Airport measured 1.9 inches.
The snowfall primarily hit during the pre-dawn hours on January 10, creating hazardous conditions during the morning rush hour. Areas farther north and west received less snow, with some locations recording only a light dusting.
Despite the relatively low totals, the storm disrupted travel across the Chicago metro area. Officials urged drivers to exercise caution on icy roads.
Residents praised volunteer observers and meteorologists for quickly sharing snow measurements. The storm marked another reminder of the season’s unpredictable weather.
