Lake County, IL – Major waterways in Lake County are now closed to all boat traffic as rising water levels continue to pose a flood risk across northern Illinois.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Chain O’Lakes and Fox River have been closed effective immediately due to significant rainfall and ongoing inflow into the watershed. Officials warn that water levels are expected to rise into moderate to major flood stages.

Authorities are urging residents, property owners, and boaters to take immediate precautions. This includes securing boats and watercraft, moving vehicles and valuables to higher ground, and implementing flood protection measures such as sandbagging where needed.

Officials also advise residents to stay off the waterways and avoid all closed areas as conditions can change rapidly. Debris and strong currents may create additional hazards.

Communities impacted include areas across Lake County, located in northern Illinois near the Wisconsin border, as well as surrounding parts of the Fox River system.

Local municipalities are coordinating resources, including sandbag distribution, to assist residents dealing with flooding concerns.

Authorities emphasize that the closure will remain in place until conditions improve and waterways are deemed safe. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow all posted restrictions as water levels continue to rise.
