Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm is set to hit Northern California starting Tuesday evening, bringing up to 47 inches of snow in some areas and hazardous travel conditions through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for regions above 3,000 feet, including Shasta County, Burney Basin, and the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The heaviest snowfall is expected Wednesday morning through early afternoon.

Areas above 4,000 feet, including Western Plumas County, Lassen Park, and the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada, could see up to 47 inches of snow by Thursday evening. Wind gusts may reach 65 mph, increasing the risk of tree damage and power outages.

Travel is expected to be difficult to impossible, with chain controls and potential road closures. Visibility will be significantly reduced due to a combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds. The morning and evening commutes on Wednesday and Thursday are likely to be heavily impacted.

Residents are advised to prepare for delayed travel, power outages, and hazardous road conditions. Travelers should check the latest road conditions through Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) or by dialing 511.
