Eureka, Calif. – Residents living near Humboldt Bay should prepare for the possibility of minor coastal flooding tonight as unusually high astronomical tides raise water levels in low-lying areas, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory for portions of the northern California coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, the Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. until midnight. High tide is forecast to peak around 10:26 p.m. at the North Spit gauge with a tide of 8.22 feet, approaching the threshold where minor flooding can begin. Similar elevated tides are expected Monday and Tuesday nights, extending the potential for minor flooding through Tuesday evening.
The greatest impacts are expected in vulnerable locations around Humboldt Bay, including King Salmon and the Arcata Bottoms, where water may briefly cover low-lying roads, parking areas and other flood-prone locations near the shoreline. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, localized inundation is possible during the highest tides.
Residents with evening travel plans should remain alert for water-covered roadways in coastal communities and avoid driving through flooded areas. Those living in flood-prone neighborhoods are encouraged to move vehicles or valuables from low-lying areas before high tide arrives.
The National Weather Service expects the elevated tide cycle to continue through Tuesday evening. Additional coastal flood advisories may be issued if water levels are forecast to exceed minor flood thresholds during upcoming high tides.
