Chicago, IL – Northeastern Illinois residents should prepare for snow showers early Friday morning that could impact the morning commute. With slippery roads and reduced visibility likely, drivers are urged to allow extra travel time.

According to the National Weather Service, the next wave of snow will move into the area after 3 a.m. Friday, primarily affecting areas north of I-80 and into the Chicago metro. Accumulations of up to 1 inch are expected, with wind-whipped snow creating additional travel hazards. Morning commuters along I-90 and other major routes should prepare for slow-moving traffic and slick conditions.

Lake effect snow is also forecast to develop along the Lake Michigan shoreline later Friday, with localized totals of up to 3 inches possible near northern Cook and Lake counties. The snow is expected to taper off by late Friday evening, but gusty north winds may lead to blowing and drifting snow during the day, further complicating travel.

The weather is expected to clear by the weekend, with sunny skies and highs in the low 30s forecast for Saturday and Sunday. However, another round of precipitation is possible early next week, with a rain-snow mix likely by Monday afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest forecasts at weather.gov/Chicago and to take precautions when driving, including reducing speed and increasing following distance.
