Valparaiso, IN – Snow and wintry weather are expected to disrupt travel across northwest Indiana through Friday evening, with accumulations and slick roads likely to cause delays. Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous driving conditions during peak commute hours.

According to the National Weather Service, the first round of snow will begin late Thursday afternoon, with light accumulations of up to 2 inches primarily north of I-80. Snow may mix with drizzle or taper off by Thursday evening. Drivers are urged to slow down and maintain extra distance on icy roads, particularly near the I-90 corridor.

A second round of snow showers is forecast to develop after 3 a.m. Friday, bringing wind-whipped snow and additional light accumulations of up to 1 inch. Morning commuters in Valparaiso and surrounding areas should expect reduced visibility and slippery roads, especially on secondary and untreated routes.

By Friday afternoon, lake effect snow is projected to develop along the Lake Michigan shoreline, impacting areas from Gary to Valparaiso and into Porter County. Localized snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible before precipitation tapers off late Friday evening. Gusty north winds could lead to blowing snow, creating additional hazards for evening travel.

The weekend is expected to bring drier conditions, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the low 30s. However, a wintry mix of rain and snow could return by Monday afternoon. Residents should monitor the latest updates at weather.gov/Chicago and exercise caution when driving.
