Ohio — A cold wind is sweeping off Lake Erie this morning, and temperatures are already setting the stage for a sharp freeze that could impact travel and damage early spring growth within hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Freeze Warning takes effect at 11 p.m. and lasts until 11 a.m. Monday, with temperatures dropping as low as 24°F across northern Ohio and into northwest Pennsylvania.

From Cleveland to Akron and east toward Erie, conditions will shift quickly later today. Highs only reach the upper 40s before clouds thicken. By evening, rain showers develop, then mix with snow after midnight. While accumulation stays minimal, wet pavement combined with falling temperatures could create slick spots, especially on bridges along I-90 and I-271. Plan extra time if traveling late.

The bigger concern arrives by early Monday morning. Sub-freezing air will settle across Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties. Frost and hard freeze conditions can kill sensitive plants and damage outdoor plumbing. Cover gardens and disconnect hoses before temperatures fall.

By Tuesday, the pattern flips. Sunshine returns with highs near 68°F, a dramatic rebound that may feel like early summer. Meteorologists now tracking this swing say warmer air could fuel instability, bringing a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night. Severe weather is not guaranteed, but rapid temperature changes often increase storm potential.

Drivers should stay alert for changing road conditions tonight into early Monday, especially in shaded or elevated areas.

Cold conditions ease after Monday morning, with additional updates expected later today as temperatures drop.
