Cleveland, OH – A macroburst with wind speeds reaching up to 90 mph struck Northeast Ohio on August 6, 2024, causing significant damage across Eastern Cuyahoga, Western Lake, and Northwest Geauga Counties.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland, the macroburst occurred between 4:20 PM and 4:50 PM EDT, spanning a 15-mile path. The NWS confirmed the event after conducting ground surveys and collecting public reports. Wind speeds were estimated between 70-90 mph, with isolated pockets reaching up to 100 mph. Despite the intensity, no fatalities or injuries were reported.

The macroburst caused extensive damage to trees, wires, and power lines, with some houses affected by falling trees. The NWS described the macroburst as a thunderstorm downdraft covering an area of at least 2.5 miles wide, with peak winds lasting between 5 to 20 minutes. Unlike tornadoes, macrobursts involve straight-line winds and can cause comparable or greater damage due to their size.
