CLEVELAND, Ohio – A sharp drop in temperatures will grip northern Ohio this week, bringing the season’s first widespread frost risk by Thursday night. Inland counties away from Lake Erie are expected to see lows dipping into the mid-30s, potentially ending the growing season for many gardens and crops.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect for much of north-central and northeast Ohio, including Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage, and Geauga counties. Temperatures will hover in the 30s Wednesday night through Friday morning, with frost most widespread Thursday night. Residents are urged to protect outdoor plants, cover sensitive vegetation, and disconnect garden hoses ahead of the chill.

The lakefront, including the I-90 corridor from Cleveland eastward to Ashtabula, will stay slightly warmer due to Lake Erie’s influence. However, inland communities from Ashland to Holmes and Wayne counties should prepare for a more pronounced cold snap.

Despite the frosty start, sunshine returns Thursday and Friday with daytime highs in the mid-60s. The next system arrives Saturday, bringing widespread rain and possible gusty winds through Saturday night. Sunday’s temperatures rebound slightly but stay seasonal, with highs in the low 60s and partly sunny skies.

This brief cold spell signals a true shift toward late-fall conditions across northern Ohio. Residents planning outdoor Halloween displays or pumpkin patch trips should plan for cool mornings and crisp, dry afternoons by early next week.
