La Crosse, Wisconsin – A fast-moving band of snow is expected to sweep across northeast Iowa and far southwest Wisconsin late Tuesday, creating slick roads and hazardous travel conditions during the evening commute and overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday for Clayton and Fayette counties in Iowa and Grant County in Wisconsin. Snow develops near sunset and continues through the overnight, with total accumulations of 2 to 4 inches expected. Forecasters note a narrow band of moderate snow could set up south of Highway 18, where localized amounts may approach the higher end of that range.
The most impacted areas include Elkader, Oelwein, and Platteville, along with surrounding rural highways and county roads. Snowfall rates could briefly increase this evening, leading to quickly deteriorating road conditions along and south of I-90. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become slippery.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Road conditions can be checked through Iowa 511 and Wisconsin 511 for real-time updates.
Snow tapers off by early Wednesday morning, but slick spots may linger through the morning commute. No additional snow is expected after daybreak, though drivers should remain cautious until crews have time to fully treat roadways.
