Fort Wayne, Ind. – August closed with barely more than an inch of rainfall in Fort Wayne, marking it the city’s driest August since 1984 and the eighth driest August on record.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, just 1.16 inches of rain fell in the city during the month, nearly 2.5 inches below normal. The city was briefly on track for its second driest August ever, until a single storm on August 28 added 0.73 inches to the total.

The lack of steady rainfall left lawns parched and fields stressed across Allen County and surrounding parts of northeast Indiana. Local farmers report browning crops and reduced soil moisture, with some areas already showing early signs of drought stress. Municipal water providers have not issued restrictions, but officials urged residents to conserve where possible.

Drivers may also encounter dusty backroads and reduced air quality during stretches of dry weather, while residents are encouraged to water gardens and young trees during early morning hours to limit evaporation.

The National Weather Service says dry conditions are likely to continue into early September, with only scattered chances of showers in the coming days.
