Abilene, Texas – Damaging winds and large hail could hit parts of North Texas overnight as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for Haskell and Throckmorton counties through 5 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, storms developing in the region could bring wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and hail as large as 1.5 inches in diameter. Forecasters say conditions are favorable for isolated tornadoes, though none have been confirmed as of late Wednesday night.
The threat zone includes key travel corridors near U.S. Highway 277 and FM 380, where visibility could rapidly deteriorate in severe downpours. Residents in affected areas are urged to remain indoors, secure loose outdoor objects, and charge electronic devices in case of power outages.
While San Angelo and Abilene are currently outside the watch area, residents should still monitor conditions closely as storms shift overnight. This weather system follows a quiet spring stretch and marks one of the more intense thunderstorm risks of April in the region.
Warnings could be upgraded if storms strengthen. Updates are expected early Thursday as the watch nears expiration.
