Dodge City, Kan. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep across western Kansas late this afternoon into the evening, bringing large hail, damaging winds, and the chance of an isolated tornado.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to develop in the late afternoon hours and intensify into the evening. The strongest cells may produce hail over one inch in diameter and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. A slight risk for severe weather has been issued for much of southwest Kansas, including Finney, Ford, and Gray counties.

Cities such as Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and Ulysses are in the zone of concern. While widespread tornado activity isn’t expected, forecasters warn that isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Drivers are urged to remain alert, especially along U.S. Highways 50 and 83, where rapidly changing conditions may cause sudden hazards.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, keep phones charged, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or trusted local outlets for updates. If warnings are issued, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy structure away from windows.

Severe weather threats may persist into the evening hours before tapering off overnight. More updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
