Hastings, Neb. – Thunderstorms are expected to fire across the Nebraska Sandhills late Tuesday afternoon before tracking east through the evening, raising the risk for strong to severe weather from 6 p.m. until midnight. The main threats include hail up to the size of quarters, gusty winds topping 60 mph, and pockets of heavy rainfall that could reduce visibility and impact travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the highest local risk will stretch across central and northern Nebraska, with cities such as North Platte, Ord, and Broken Bow sitting in the core threat zone. While the tornado risk remains very low, forecasters warn that hail and damaging wind gusts could be enough to cause localized damage to vehicles, crops, and weaker structures.

Residents in Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings may also see storms build in after sunset, though these are expected to be less intense compared to areas farther west. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm times, secure outdoor items, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.

Weaker thunderstorms may linger into early Wednesday morning, but the primary severe threat diminishes after midnight. Additional updates will be issued if new watches or warnings are needed.
