Bismarck, ND – An extreme cold warning remains in effect across much of North Dakota until noon Tuesday, with wind chills dipping as low as 45 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 10 minutes under these conditions. Areas north and east of the Missouri River, including Bismarck, Minot, and Jamestown, are among the hardest hit.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, covering all exposed skin, and to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. Pets should be kept indoors, and livestock should have adequate shelter, food, and water.
The dangerous cold will gradually ease west to east through the morning hours, but temperatures will remain well below freezing throughout the day. Frostbite and hypothermia remain significant risks, and local officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors and ensuring proper use of heating equipment indoors.
Travelers should exercise caution and prepare for delays, as extreme cold can strain vehicles and infrastructure. Stay tuned for updates as conditions improve later in the day.
