Amarillo, TX – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles until noon Tuesday, with wind chills plunging to as low as 35 degrees below zero.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that the dangerously low wind chills pose a severe risk of frostbite within 10 minutes of exposure. Areas affected include Amarillo, Guymon, Pampa, Dumas, and Palo Duro Canyon. Most of the Panhandle region, excluding the far southeastern areas, is under the warning.

Residents are urged to dress warmly in layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, when outdoors. Officials also recommend keeping pets indoors and ensuring outdoor animals have proper shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

With temperatures near record lows, hypothermia is a significant concern. Local authorities advise minimizing outdoor activities and checking on vulnerable neighbors and family members. Portable heaters should be used cautiously to prevent fire or carbon monoxide exposure.

The extreme cold is expected to ease later in the day, but icy road conditions may persist. Travelers should plan for delays and check road conditions before heading out. Stay tuned to local updates as temperatures begin to improve.
