Bismarck, N.D. – Drivers in western and south central North Dakota woke up to dense fog Monday morning, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less along major highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, the fog is impacting areas including Watford City, Dickinson, Mandan, Bismarck, Bowman, and Fort Yates. Officials caution motorists to expect sudden changes in visibility, particularly at intersections and railroad crossings, through mid to late morning.
The heaviest fog was reported along stretches of Interstate 94 near Dickinson and Bismarck, as well as U.S. Highway 85 around Watford City and Bowman. Law enforcement advises drivers to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and leave extra distance between vehicles.
Travelers in smaller towns such as Elgin, Hazen, and Killdeer should also prepare for patchy but dense fog on county roads. School buses and morning commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time.
The fog is expected to lift by late morning as temperatures rise, but conditions may remain variable until then. More seasonal weather is expected to return by the afternoon.
