Bismarck, North Dakota – Snow and gusty winds could turn highways across northwest and north central North Dakota slick and snow-covered by daybreak Wednesday, threatening both the morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening for Divide, Burke, Renville, Bottineau, Rolette, Williams, Mountrail, Ward, McHenry and Pierce counties. Cities including Minot, Williston, Bottineau, Rugby and Stanley could see 4 to 8 inches of snow. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, producing blowing snow and visibility reductions.
Forecasters also warn that a period of freezing rain may develop at the onset late Tuesday night, increasing the risk of ice-covered roads before snow fully takes over. Portions of U.S. 2, U.S. 83 and rural highways could become hazardous quickly.
Drivers should prepare for slower travel speeds, longer stopping distances and possible delays. Consider adjusting Wednesday travel plans and monitor road reports from the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
Confidence in heavy snowfall continues to grow, and warnings may replace the watch if snow bands intensify before Wednesday.
